White Paper: 16 Top Features of a World-Class Wholesale Billing System

Dear Colleague:

“Make progress every day.”  That’s a great corporate slogan the marketing geniuses at Verizon dreamed up about 12 years ago.

And it’s a fitting slogan for billing experts, too.  In fact, many of the billing experts I’ve come to know in the past 20 years are fanatics about progress!  They enjoy the game of streamlining processes, growing their human talent, and improving their technology and tools.

Trouble is, when it comes time to upgrade a billing system, there are a bewildering array of features and capabilities to consider.  And that’s no surprise when you consider that wholesale billing is one of the most complex areas in the business.

Quest for Wholesale Billing Excellence

Well Telarix commissioned TRI to write a white paper that sorts through the maze of billing system features to be considered.  The paper organizes the top 16 advanced billing features into a kind of reference guide you can use to pinpoint your organization’s needs and help you plot your path to progress.

The input for this paper was primary research, particularly the discussions I had with several billing experts at Telarix plus those at a few other billers.

The paper is divided into four sections as follows:

  • System Design --  This first section looks at the underlying systems framework that billing functions are built on, such as the degree of systems integration and scalability.  Even though system investments may be expensive at first, they can easily pay for themselves later on.  In fact, they enable many other systems improvements.
  • Invoices/Declarations — This area is home to most of billing’s processing load and time-sensitive deadlines.  It’s also where any lack of data integrity and efficiency can really hurt you.  Five critical features in invoices/declarations are discussed here.
  • Settlement/Audit — Systems in the Settlement/Audit area are some of the hardest to develop and fine tune because they reconcile the statements and invoices of your partners.  And it’s another area where automation is desperately needed.
  • Finance/Analysis Qualities — If your organization excels in invoicing and settlement, give yourself a pat on the back.  But you could still lose your shirt if the Finance/Analysis area is not handled well, for its here where critical reporting, risk assessment, and credit checks need to happen.  Here we identified four areas where advanced capabilities are needed.
